Staff Spotlight: Susan Galpin-Tyree

September is upon us which means it is a new month and therefore it is time to highlight another one of our amazing staff members! This month we are highlighting our Administrative Specialist Susan Galpin-Tyree! Susan has been with us for around six months and is amazing at keeping all of us organized with scheduling meetings. She is a phenomenal copy editor with an eye for detail that is certainly unmatched at our center. She also has made our return to the office much more enjoyable by ensuring that everything is clean, sanitized, and welcoming.

She is a proponent of lifelong learning as it enhances social inclusion, active citizenship and individual development. She also holds that civic engagement makes a difference in civic life by promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes.

Susan is a wonderful asset to our team and we are delighted that she is willing to share a little bit more about herself with all of you!

Home town

I have no hometown, per se. I was born at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia. My father was an officer in the USAF and we lived on air bases in Virginia, California and Arizona. We also lived in Japan, Turkey and England.

Top three life highlights

  1. My sons

  2. My grandchildren

  3. Finding my voice - having the courage to speak and letting it be enough.

What inspires you?

While life endures, it is fragile at the same time. Resilience inspires me. Persistence inspires me.

Passions

Life-long learning is my passion. While continuing formal education is important, it is also important to actively listen to others with the aim of learning something new.

Suggested reading

  1. King of the Bingo Game, a short story, and Invisible Man, a novel, both by Ralph Ellison.

  2. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

What is something that you learned recently?

I am reminded every day that there is always more to know. Curiosity about life keeps the mind active rather than passive, and opens a world of possibilities.

What is the best thing about your job?

I like my job because 1) everyone shares the same vision and is dedicated to the CGEST mission, 2) I have a degree of autonomy that allows me to be creative and express my ideas, and 3) it challenges me to excel.

What is one of your proudest moments at CGEST?

Watching my fellow staff members succeed in all that they do.

What has been the most impactful tech innovation you use in your everyday life?

The shift of the web, once available only to the military, to a form of communication for the general public.

I am committed to advancing equity for women of color in STEM because...

while I am not a woman of color, I am a woman and have had my personal experiences of lack of employment equality, legal protections, bodily autonomy, and political representation, just to name a few. Our daughters and granddaughters deserve better.

Thank you Susan for sharing with us a little bit more about what makes you so special. We are honored to have you on our team and truly appreciate all that you do for the center from editing, scheduling, and making the halls of our office look their most beautiful. We couldn't do it without you!
