Calling all STEM-focused high school students!

The Center for Bio-mediated & Bio-inspired Geotechnics is seeking local high school students to participate in a 5-week paid summer program that focuses on developing sustainable, biologically controlled, and biologically inspired solutions in the area of biogeotechnical engineering.



About the Center: The Center for Bio-mediated & Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) – funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) whose headquarters are located on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. The goal of the CBBG is to develop sustainable biologically-controlled and -inspired solutions in the areas of:

  • Hazard mitigation

  • Environmental protection and restoration

  • Infrastructure construction

  • Subsurface Exploration and Excavation


The Young Scholars Program at the Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG) immerses participants in technical research and exposes them to the university experience, specifically within the scope of the CBBG. Scholars are provided with a mentored research experience, participate in personal/professional development, enrichment activities, and present a poster based on biogeotechnical engineering research at the end of the summer.

Program Details

  • Mentored Research Experience

  • $2000 Stipend (housing and food are not provided)

  • 5 weeks (June 1 – July 2, 2021)

  • Program offered at Arizona State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and New Mexico State University

Program Eligibility

  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

  • High school student (graduating seniors are eligible to apply)

  • May not enroll in classes or hold other jobs during the day

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week for entire 5-week program

  • Parental permission

  • Minimum age of 16 years by start of program

  • Students from diverse groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM programs are encouraged to apply


How to Apply

As part of the application process, be prepared to upload the following in PDF format:

  • Unofficial transcript(s) from high school and college (if applicable).

  • A letter of recommendation (an adult, such as your science or math teacher, who knows you well and can speak to your interests, aptitude, maturity, and experiences).
