ASU CompuGirls Cyber Warriors Camp Project “SeaPerch” Has Students Build a Marine ROV
By Rachel Ware
In the ASU CompuGirls Cyber Warriors camp, the same curriculum was followed as the other locations but with the project being SeaPerch, where students worked in groups to build an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) meant to be controlled underwater.
In the final presentations for the ASU CompuGirls’ projects, students showed their technosocial change agent skills by presenting how they would use cyber security/technology to tackle an issue. The presentations were detailed and creative and ended up themed around the ocean with the SeaPerch project. One group talked about how ghost nets endanger ocean wildlife and explored solutions using ROVs to take those loose fishing nets out of the water. Another focused on pushing companies to produce less plastic while also involving ROVs in ocean clean-up. The other groups focused on using ROVs to avoid dangerous dives and more ways to protect sea life.
The camp had a welcoming and fun atmosphere throughout the activities, discussions, and breaks. More importantly, students brought so much knowledge and passion with them and mentor teacher Serena encouraged that when interacting with them.
