CGEST Project Aide Sarthak Aggarwal Details the Activities of Cyber Warriors 2022 Camp
By Sarthak Aggarwal
The Cyber Warriors summer camp held in-person and virtually across three different locations was successful in motivating young students of color to pursue STEM courses by attracting their interest toward cyber-security.
The major highlight of the camp held at ASU Tempe campus was the SeaPerch project. SeaPerch is an educational tool and kit that allows students to construct a simple, remotely operated underwater vehicle, or Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), from polyvinyl chloride pipe and other readily made materials.
The major aim of the project was to motivate the participant’s interest in electrical and mechanical activities by teaching them soldering and drilling techniques. Moreover, they were asked to look for an environmental problem their ROV could solve, sparking the innovation in them.
The camp took place in the Memorial Union at ASU for four days and at the Business Administration building for the closing ceremony on the fifth day. It was a challenge to carry and store all the material from the MU and shift it to the BA building the next day. The events department at the MU was a lifesaver when it volunteered to store all our camp material at their facilities.
The camp was a fun experience for all the students giving them an insight to the prospects of a STEM career.
