CGEST Hosts Kathleen McCartney, President, Smith College

By Jasmine Scott

On Saturday, March 12, 2022, CGEST and ASU had the honor of hosting Kathleen McCartney, President of Smith College, Dr. Kimberly Scott’s alma mater.

The visit began the way that all great visits do -- with introductions, coffee, and pastries. After introductions, Dr. Scott, CGEST Founding Executive Director, shared some of the research that CGEST is conducting, and why creating a racially-ethnically diverse community of scholars, students, policy makers, and practitioners who create innovative scholarships for girls and women in STEM is so powerful, important, and relevant.

Dr. Tara Nkrumah, CGEST Acting Executive Director, shared the goals and future plans of CGEST with President McCartney focusing on five key areas: grants, culturally relevant/responsive training hub, CompuGirls flagship programs, conferences, and publications. Following the presentation, President McCartney transitioned to a golf cart tour to see more of ASU’s beautiful campus before we said our goodbyes.

With the support of CGEST Associate Faculty member Dr. Dalya Lateef, CGEST Graduate Research Assistant Rachel Ware, and CGEST staff Alexus Robertson and Jasmine Scott, the visit went smoothly. It was a privilege to share a little more about ASU and CGEST with President McCartney, and we are certain that she had a great time with us!
