CompuGirls Camps: Cyber Warriors and Hawaiʻi Summer Camp

By Alexis DeVries

Our mission here at the Center for Gender Equity in Science and Technology is to actively drive the discourse and experiences of underrepresented girls in STEM by owning, generating, and critiquing the collective body of scholarship on and offering culturally responsive programs and STEM education for girls of color. We are currently focusing on a virtual camping program called CompuGirls Cyber Warriors, a month-long program where we introduce high school students to cybersecurity topics. We hope the program will also motivate young women to be involved at the forefront of technology. We strive to implement a culturally relevant and responsive curriculum that allows students to embrace their identities and cultures within STEM fields.

The Cyber Warriors camp teaches tech skills to students of color and offers a setting that focuses on empowerment, community advancement, and self-discovery. CompuGirls provides a roadmap for understanding how girls of color can define themselves in today's digital age. Through programs such as CompuGirls, CGEST offers one of the few technical programs that combine culturally relevant practices with project-based activities. These activities encourage students to develop researched projects in digital media, coding, and robotics.

This summer, CGEST will host their biggest camp yet. CompuGirls Hawai’i Summer Camp is a partnership between CGEST and Hawaiʻi Pacific University between June 4th and June 10th, 2023. This week-long residential STEM camp in Honolulu is for local Hawai’i middle and high school girls exploring cybersecurity, coding, app development, ecology, astronomy, and marine biology.
