Congratulations, Rachel!!

We want to give a huge shout-out to one of our student workers Rachel Ware!

On Saturday, April 10, Rachel, ASU graduating senior and Barrett College Fellow, successfully defended her thesis. Rachel’s interest in online learning for STEM students spurred her research into online education in STEM and creating a podcast to disseminate her findings. Dr. Tara Nkrumah served as the second committee member with Dr. Peter Schmidt as the committee member chair for Rachel’s Barrett Thesis.

During her virtual defense, Rachel provided the following takeaways:

  1. Online learning is a sizeable part of higher education.

  2. Online learning is a more recent form of distance learning.

  3. The jury is out on whether students learn better or worse in online classes, but technology has some promise for engagement and learning.

  4. Students who are prepared and see value in online classes can have more positive outcomes.

  5. Different student populations experience online learning differently.
