On May 3, 2022, CGEST in partnership with the Center for Biodiversity Outcomes (CBO) achieved the 101st recipient title of the ASU Women and Philanthropy grant. The generous award of $48,511 in support of Engaging Girls in STEM will offer an interactive and experiential STEM program that combines environmental concepts and social issues. The program will start in fall 2022 working with 15 high school-aged girls from September to March. The participants will be mentored through monthly in-person and virtual meetings on environmental-related topics and integrated activities designed to challenge inequities manifested in STEM.

Dr. Tara Nkrumah received the award at the 20th Anniversary Gala hosted at El Chorro. Dr. Nkrumah remarked on the significance of this award, which furthers the goals of CGEST and CBO to promote gender equity in science and technology and assists in dismantling the barriers for girls in STEM education and beyond. Other ASU team members on this grant include Beth Polidoro, Kimberly Scott, Leah Gerber, Gwen Iacona and Caitlin Hawkins.

We would like to especially thank again the phenomenal Women and Philanthropy members for making this all possible to transform the outcomes of 15 young women in Phoenix in STEM education.
