Girls Who Code Book Series Defeats Ban

By CGEST Team

Recently, the Girls Who Code book series was banned by a Pennsylvania school district and added to the PEN America’s Index of School Book Bans. But young people and teachers in the district fought against the ban, and they won.

“This series was created so that no student—including those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, those without Wi-Fi access and/or access to adequate computers—would be left behind,” said Girls Who Code CEO Dr. Tarika Barrett in an email. “We also created these books so readers could have diverse young coder role models. It’s no coincidence that these banned books feature diverse protagonists, predominantly of color. It’s also no coincidence that our books were banned alongside other books that tackle racism, sexism, and discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.”
