Tapia Conference Review: Women of Color in Computing: Addressing the Double-Bind Through A Researcher-Practitioner Collaborative

On September 20, 2018, representatives from the Kapor Center and CGEST presented at the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing conference in Orlando, FL as a panel presenting the Women of Color in Computing Research Collaborative.

In a highly interactive and engaging presentation, approximately 60 attendees participated in small group and large group reflection and discussion about intersectional identities: intersecting and multilayered identities like gender, race/ethnicity, religion, class, immigrant status as they interact with structures of social power and institutions.

After this rousing discussion, where many great points were raised, such as the impacts of language and accents on one's ability to access social capital and power, more information about the data-based rationale and structure of the project was given.

This was an outstanding event that brought together students, faculty, and professionals to engage constructively with the WOC in Computing Research Collective!
